The Challenger Learning Center of Lake Erie West offers distance learning opportunities that will bring the excitement of a simulated space emergency into your classroom. True to the Challenger Center philosophy, this simulation emphasizes experiential activities that promote teamwork, problem solving, communication and decision making skills. The "Tiger Team" seeks to find the solution to the oxygen emergency that faced the crew of Apollo 13 (grades 5-12) or the STS-114 heat shield problem (grades 9-12). Your students will devised solutions, test these solutions, modify and retest as needed, and instruct the spacecraft commander as to the implementation of the solution.
What if your school doesn't have a distance learning room or equipment? No problem! If you have an internet connected computer in your classroom, we can connect by video calling using a webcam. We will loan the webcam if you do not have one available. If you have a distance learning room or a Polycom conferencing system, we can also connect using those technologies.
Length: approximately 45 minutes - 1 hour (one class period)
Note: The program fee includes the curriculum, use of the pre-connection activity materials, distance connection activity materials and teacher training. Prior teacher training may be completed via webinar and will take approximately 1 hour online.
